Detection of Rare Earth Elements in Minerals and Soils by Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) Using Interval PLS

The numerous applications of rare earth elements (REE) has lead to a growing global demand and the search for new REE deposits. One promising technique exploration these deposits is laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS). Among number advantages possibility perform on-site measurements without sample preparation. Since deposit based on analysis various geological compartments surrounding area, REE-bearing rock soil samples were analyzed in this work. field are from three European Sweden Norway. focus cerium, lanthanum, neodymium yttrium. Two different approaches data used evaluation. first approach univariate regression (UVR). While was successful synthetic samples, quantitative sites influenced by matrix effects. Principal component (PCA) can be determine origin second multivariate methods, particular interval PLS (iPLS) regression. In comparison UVR, method better suited determination contents heterogeneous samples.
